New Jersey State MTNA Competitions 

Date: Saturday, October 27, 2018

Registration Deadline: 3:00 PM (Eastern Time), September 12, 2018 

 Location: Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ

General Information:

  • You must register online at the MTNA Competition link: https://www.mtna.org/MTNA/Engage/Competitions/Competitions.aspx
  • Please refer to the competition page at MTNA website for all registration information & registration deadlines, student and teacher eligibility requirements, and repertoire requirement information.
  • Student and teacher eligibility requirements are outlined specifically in the “Competition Guidelines” on the website.
  • Entrants are responsible for providing their own accompanists. NJMTA provides a list of recommended accompanists should you need one. Official accompanists are not provided at the state level.
  • Winners will advance to the Eastern Division Online-Only Video Competitions

MTNA Student Composition Competition

Application Deadline:  Mid-September 2018. The exact date TBA in May 2018.

Intent:  The intent of the composition competition sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association is to encourage creativity and self-expression in student musicians through the art of composing and to recognize their achievements as well as the significant work of their teachers.

Awards: Winners of the state competition will proceed to the Eastern Division competition. Winners of the division competition will proceed to the National competition.

How to Enter:  The application with computer-generated PDF score and MIDI file must be submitted online. Other audio file formats cannot be accepted. Handwritten scores will not be accepted. All submissions must meet the Entrant Requirements and Teacher Requirements. Go online to www.mtna.org/competitions for rules and applications.

Fees:          Elementary (age 5-10)           $55
                    Junior (age 11-14)                    $75
                    Senior (age 15-18)                  $105 
Young Artist (age 19-26)      $105

 (Entrants should be of age as of January 1, 2018.)

Score Requirements: 

  • The PDF should be printable on 8.5 x 11-inch letter-sized paper.
  • PDF score must be computer generated using music-notation software.
  • Cover art should not be included.
  • Measures of the composition must be numbered, preferably at the beginning of each system.
  • All materials must be labeled with the name of the composition, the name of the student and the category (Elementary, Junior, Senior, and Young Artist).
  • The score must not include teacher name or any reference to school/institution, biography or picture of entrant.
  • No change may be made to the manuscript once it has been submitted with the application.
  • The entrant certifies that the composition is an original work, and the score was produced by the entrant.
